Beginning with Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s Messe de minuit de Noël, music for the night of the Nativity includes carols and the cantata Der Herr ist mit mir by Bach’s mentor Dietrich Buxtehude before the arrival at dawn of the Shepherds singing the Sanctus of the Missa Brevis by contemporary Czech composer Jiři Pavlica.
