Mary’s reply to Angel Gabriel at the Annunciation is celebrated by the Motet and Mass Dixit Maria by Hans Leo Hassler, a respected and influential contemporary of William Byrd. Martin Luther’s Advent hymn Nun Komm der Heiden Heiland (Come Saviour of the Nations) inspired many composers. The Choir’s sequence features uplifting settings by 14 of them, from a Bohemian bishop born in 1483 to Telemann and J S Bach in the 1700s. With soloists from the Choir and strings led by Nicola Bright.
